Earthen Space was just a play on words when we, as designers, got wildly enthused and grabbed a passing idea and moved it to reality, going through all the necessary design steps. We started by drawing inspiration from the 5 elements, earth, fire, water, air and space, and translated them into an architectural language through the use design elements, pure forms, geometry, and still adding our touch of unconventionality, because different is our way of doing our art. We grounded ourselves in simplicity, utility and elegance and adopted the philosophy of minimalism that helped us avoid the unnecessary and focus on what actually matters. Less is indeed more.

Varsha Ramlall Koekemoer
Co-Founder | Creative Director | Pr. Snr. Interior Designer
Varsha is a registered Professional Senior Interior Designer with 12+ years of experience. She holds a 4-year B-Tech degree in Interior Design and brings a wealth of experience shaped by projects across South Africa, Mauritius, Senegal, and Ivory Coast. Before founding Earthen Space, she held a senior role at a prestigious design firm, gaining extensive experience across a range of high-end residential, corporate, hospitality and commercial projects. She now brings that depth to her own practice, blending professionalism with a grounded, intuitive design sensibility. She also currently serves as the Mauritian Ambassador for the African Institute of Interior Design Professions (IID), actively supporting the growth of the design industry across the continent.
Sean Koekemoer
Co-Founder | Technical Director | Architectural Designer
Sean's career started in 2014 after obtaining his 4 year Bachelor of Technology degree in Architectural Technlogy & Design from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in South Africa and has since worked on distinguished projects in quite a few countries in the world. He has gained extensive experience as a Professional Senior Architectural Technologist and Designer in the innovative world of interior design and architecture. With a strong foundation in both architectural tech and interior design, Sean brings a refined, technical perspective to every project. His work reflects a balance of innovation, precision, and thoughtful spatial planning. Our small team consist of two other qualified and experienced members, namely: Lamya Diljore, and Shannon Arekion, Interior Designers.

our craft actually is
"Interior + exterior design is the art and science of understanding people's behaviour to create functional, structurally stable and aesthetically pleasing spaces." At our studio, we offer a comprehensive approach that blends interior design and exterior design; two disciplines that work hand in hand to shape thoughtful, functional, and beautiful spaces from the inside out. Yet, you can choose either discipline independently. While often confused with interior decoration, interior design goes much deeper. It involves space planning, construction detailing, lighting design, material specification, and technical integration. Interior designers are trained in software such as AutoCAD and 3D modeling tools to produce technical drawings and visualizations. Exterior design involves the planning and conceptualization of a building’s form, structure, and spatial organization. It addresses the external envelope, construction systems, circulation flow, and how a structure interacts with its environment. We approach both disciplines holistically, ensuring that every element, structural or decorative, serves a purpose, supports the function of the space, and enhances the human experience. Education & Professional Training: Both interior and architectural design are specialized fields requiring formal education and training. Interior design can be studied as a 3-year diploma, with an optional 4th-year bachelor's and 5th-year master’s degree, similar to the structure of architectural education.

Since our humble founding in 2020, our creative team of designers have been transforming spaces with fresh and 'out of the box' ideas in several countries. We are here to help you design the space you’ve always wished you could live or work in while being attentive to your budget.

We actually do it
The interior + exterior design process follows a systematic and coordinated methodology, including research, analysis and integration of knowledge, to satisfy the needs and resources of the client. It consists of 3 phases, namely, Initiation, Planning and Execution. The description is based on a turnkey project. Any of the services can be completed independently.
